threeness

Graham Kings, who is the theological secretary of Fulcrum, has given the following brief analysis of the tensions between Evangelical groupings in the CofE:

You have heard that it was said in the past, 'Two Natures: Divine or Human in Christ - nothing in between' and the Nicene and Chalcedonian Fathers replied, 'Divine and Human in one person'.

You have heard that it was said in the past, 'Two Religions: Catholic or Reformed - nothing in between' and the Church of England replied, 'Catholic and Reformed'.

You have heard that it was said, 'Two Traditions: Evangelical or Anglo Catholic - nothing in between' and the Church of England replied, 'Evangelical, Liberal and Anglo Catholic'.

You hear that it is said, 'Lambeth Invitations: The Episcopal bishops or the Global South Anglican bishops - nothing in between' and the Archbishop of Canterbury replies, 'The Episcopal bishops, without their focus of disunity concerning sexual ethics and ecclesiology (New Hampshire), and the Global South Anglican bishops without their foci of disunity concerning ecclesiology (AMiA and CANA) and violence (Harare).

There is another form for binary thinking, this time choosing two but not allowing the centre to exist:

You hear that it is said, 'Anglican Evangelicals: Conservative Evangelical and Charismatic Evangelical - nothing in between' and Evangelical Anglicans reply: 'Conservative, Open and Charismatic streams interweave'.

You hear that it is said, 'Anglican Evangelicals: Reform and New Wine - nothing in between' and Evangelical Anglicans reply: 'Reform, Fulcrum and New Wine all provide important insights'.
